Frank Castle is going to have to get used to a level of weirdness he never imagined.

Not only has Matt Murdock arrived as Daredevil and claims to know who everyone is, but he’s brought along the ghost of Karen Page that they can all see. If that isn’t weird enough, he and the rest of the group are attacked by a confused and angry Hulk.

This issue follows the events of the series from Frank’s perspective. From the nightmares that wake him to the anger he feels, Frank knows something isn’t right with him. His interrogation of Banner is going to reveal that there is something not right with the world. Frank is feeling that things are off. Even the happiness of a job, a purpose and a woman who loves him aren’t enough to drive out the feeling that something is off about him.

When he and Banner set off to solve the mystery of the notes leading Bruce to the missing heroes, we see the extent of the changes to the world. Tony Stark is in prison for a series of white collar crimes, Donald Blake is a rookie cop and Loki is a street kid who knows a lot more than he’s letting on. When the next part of their trip leads Banner and Frank to the home of Wanda Maximoff, Frank not only learns more about his purpose, but remembers more about himself. A revelation that might come in handy when they have to track down the next name on Banner’s list.

The series continues to get more intense and the mystery gets more interesting in this issue. All of the cameos and references work well with the story and Howard and Cates do a great job of making the story special and the dialogue unique. Making this issue about Frank’s journey gives him depth of character in relation to how tempting it is to stay in this world that he knows is wrong. Seeing that there is something gnawing at him psychologically and emotionally adds additional drama to the issue and the series. With great art from Couceiro and an engaging story, I continue to be curious about where this story is going and what it will unlock next.
