The Rundown: The only way John is going to get his partner to trust him is to tell her about the darkest moment in his life and how he played a part in his own tragedy.

His story takes him to the final day of the planet Mars. As death and destruction rain down on the planet, J’onn severs his connection to the rest of the planet and does the same for his wife and child. As they make their way to a means of escape, J’onn’s wife sees her husband differently as he ignores his calling as a manhunter and continues to escape the city. When they finally reach their destination, J’onn finds his darkest secrets revealed to his family and the tragedy of Mars hits him on every level.

Back on Earth, John and his partner come to an understanding as the mission to save the missing girl comes back into focus. Diane is still unsure whether or not she can trust John, but she does know that the only way to get the girl back will be with the help of the Martian Manhunter.

The Story: Steve Orlando takes time to slow down the story to explore the tragedy behind Manhunter’s actions in this series. He strips down J’onn J’onzz and changes the way readers will view the hero. It’s a tough thing to witness a character that has been revered for being wise and even in his temper and demeanor depicted in this way, but it will be interesting to see how Orlando rebuilds the character going forward.

The Art: Riley Rossmo’s art is fantastic. So many moments give the reader a visceral reaction and the style is great throughout. There is a fluidity to the depiction of Mars and its inhabitants that makes the story more interesting visually.
