Manor Black #1
Dark Horse Comics
Written by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt
Art by Tyler Crook
The Rundown: In a world of hidden magic, a young woman might become the successor to a powerful legacy.
After a deadly accident that claims multiple lives, the police begin to investigate. They quickly determine that there are too many strange aspects to the accident to be believed.
At the same time, family patriarch Roman Black is troubled about a decision he needs to make. To ease his mind, he travels to the family crypt to have a conversation with his ancestors about what he must do and why it must be soon.
As the investigation into the deaths heats up (literally), a young woman frantically makes her way to the Black Manor with magical pursuers behind her. When Roman Black intervenes to save the woman, he makes a decision that will have repercussions that no one imagined.
The Story: Cullen Bunn has always intrigued with interesting and unusual stories. I’ve always been a fan of the new and unexpected worlds he creates and the strange inhabitants of them. This is no exception. With this first issue, Bunn and co-writer Brian Hurtt have established the characters and their motivations as well as begin multiple mysteries that drew me in as a reader. I really want to see where this story goes and I found myself immersed in this world and the turns the story and characters take.
The Art: Tyler Crook’s art is great. I love the style of the pages and panels and how he moves the story along visually. Can’t wait to see more.
