Lost in Space
Netflix
Season 1 Episode 10
Danger, Will Robinson
Everything has been leading to this point. One of the first things that the episode does is let us off the hook early about one of the dangling plot threads before plunging us into more tension to come. John and Don managed to survive the explosion and are clinging to a piece of wreckage. John has managed to find a way to transmit to Will on the surface and he picks up the signal as Maureen and Judy return to camp with Smith and the resurrected Robot, who only listens to Smith now.
The other refueled Jupiters take off and head for the Resolute, but Maureen delays take off to plead to Smith to let them go after John and Don. Smith agrees and they take off. They have less than an hour to find John and Don before the Resolute leaves the area and when their attempts to find them fall short, Smith orders them to abandon the search. Maureen decides to take on some of John’s bad ass qualities and puts the ship into a nosedive, forcing the Robot to protect Smith by moving her into the hub. Maureen locks them in and resumes the search for John.
That moment between the family and Smith goes a long way towards establishing to the audience that the Robinson’s have learned something from their experience. The tension continues to mount when Maureen finally locates the wreckage and attempts to shoot a line to it only to have Smith escape and the Robot go after the family. This is another moment that has Maureen take the lead as well as give Will the opportunity to overcome his fears. It’s a great action sequence that has some intense surprises and leads to the biggest surprise of all at the end of the episode.
Episode 10 marks the end of the first season of Lost in Space and if this is any indication of what the writers and showrunner have in store for the next season, I am definitely on board. I would love to see how they move the story forward with the new circumstances the Robinsons find themselves in and how their interactions with Smith will play out going forward, considering she’s tipped her hand. Well done first season.
