Season 1 Episode 4
The Nexus Event
Frayed nerves and paranoia infiltrate the TVA as Mobius and Hunter B-15 search for Loki and Sylvie.
Young Sylvie is enjoying her life on Asgard when she is taken from her timeline and brought before the TVA to stand trial. It is there that we see how the young girl escapes along with her connection to Ravonna. A connection the woman will remember as she is brought before the Time Keepers. After her meeting, she meets up with Mobius who needs access to the Hunter that was captured in order to get the information he needs to track them both. This is the perfect way to hammer home the concept that there is something rotten at the core of the TVA and whoever is in charge will do anything to protect their secrets.
Loki and Sylvie are still trapped on Lamentis and time is running out. As the TVA continues to panic, Loki and Sylvie get closer as the end of the world draws closer. With time running out, their only escape leads them back to the TVA. After being separated, Loki tries to talk to Mobius, but instead ends up shoved through a door back to a familiar place and in the company of a familiar face. The cameo was not only well done, but surprising and literally made me smile. What was more interesting is the nature of the moment, what it reveals about the character and just how much Loki is forced to confront himself in different ways.
Mobius has an interesting arc as well as he finds himself facing multiple roadblocks and suspicion during his investigation. The fact that he keeps being thwarted at every turn is a great dramatic device that gives Owen Wilson the opportunity to stretch in the role. He knows something is wrong, but can he look beyond his existence to seek it out. We also discover what caused the Nexus event that led the TVA to them and it is a whopper of a revelation. The scene was made infinitely more interesting because of Hiddleston and Wilson’s performances.
Things get darker when B-15 goes after Sylvie and does something unexpected. Mobius finally starts to ask questions as he and Ravonna spend time together. Her evasiveness is automatically suspicious and you definitely get a sense that there is something else going on with her. Something that goes beyond the revelation Sylvie made to Loki. Mobius does something unexpected as well and learns the truth. What follows is the most shocking moment of the season. Something that came out of left field and was completely unexpected.
The conclusion of the episode brings Loki and Sylvie before the Time Keepers and after an epic battle, a huge reveal is made and another shocking moment left me reeling. So shocking that I was absolutely flabbergasted by it. This episode was epic in everything that it did. The acting was spot on and the events of the episode were shocking, surprising and amazing. There is no way to predict where this show will go next and that is infinitely appealing.
