The Rundown: One of the children will discover something that will change all of their lives while another will discover someone who will do the same thing.

A young girl in the winter woods decides to help her ailing father by cutting some wood. Unfortunately, when she returns she discovers that her father is dead and the creature that killed him waiting for her. A creature that is remorseful for what it has done for her and has a proposal that will make sure that she is not alone. Romie recounts that moment as a stranger in the present comes across her drawing on a wall. As the sun begins to rise, she leaves the injured man in order to hide.

When Billy comes looking for her, he discovers the man and learns that there are more nearby. Overcome by hunger, Billy feeds and discovers something strange and new about himself. After telling the others about the people nearby, Romie emerges and discovers something else new. Something that will change everything about her world and that of her friends.

The Story: Lemire brilliantly draws in the reader with intriguing characters and circumstances while also delivering great tension, terror and story. The story continues to be compelling and I love getting the back story on one of the kids and how that story informs who she is and the choices she makes. I love the evolution of the characters as well and the brilliant introduction of a new character that elevates the story in new and entertaining ways.

The Art: Dustin Nguyen’s art strikes a perfect emotional balance on every page of this issue. The art shows both the innocence of these characters as well as the viciousness beneath the surface. A gorgeous looking issue that is visually immersive.
