The Rundown: A young man discovers something strange in the woods outside his home as a local legend is born.

It’s 1909 and Henry has returned to help his mother on their farm. When a strange sound rings out in the night, Henry is tasked to discover what it could be. Shotgun in hand, Henry discovers something huge and dark lurking in the chicken coop. Something that takes off into the trees. When he goes into town the next day, he discovers the strange creature has been all over South Jersey.

Almost two hundred years earlier, Japhet Leeds is awaiting the birth of the family’s thirteenth child. As Deborah continues a difficult and lengthy labor, she curses the child and the difficulty in giving birth. Words that will craft something dark and disturbing when the child is finally born and they can see what it has become.

The Story: James Tynion IV and Steve Foxe create an entertaining and thrilling mystery in this first issue. I like how the story is broken up into two different eras with a dark through line between them. The first part of the story is an interesting mystery while the second part is a darkly compelling monster story that engaged me as a reader.

The Art: Kowalski delivers some interesting and beautifully detailed art throughout the issue. I loved the visual style and the use of shadow to tease the monster.
