The Rundown: Sung tries to keep himself safe in a world that changes those who break the rules.

Young Sung and his friend Eris find themselves discovering firsthand what happens when you break the rules of New Sanctum when Sung makes a minor infraction that causes him to grow scales on his chest. When his hero father intervenes to save the pair, Sung dedicates his life to following the rules to prevent himself from becoming a monster.

Years later, Sung is preparing to take a test that will solidify his future and protect his family and Eris attempts to help him cheat as a joke. As he begins his trials, he sees what happens to those who cheat as well as what his future will be. A future where he decides the fate of people who are different, including Eris.

The Story: Pak crafts an interesting story with some great drama in this first issue. The story crafts an interesting and intriguing world as well as characters that are beautifully complicated. Sung is delightfully complicated himself and everything that he goes through to survive a world that is full of secrets is interesting to see. There is a dark desperation to his actions that had me engaged with his struggles throughout the issue and the moments when he takes action create a level of suspense that I want to see explored.

The Art: Galindo creates some beautiful art throughout the issue. I love the visual style of the story and how it mingles the visually strange within the world being created.
