Alex Kurtzman continues his plans to expand the Star Trek universe through new shows and now there’s news that another expansion of Gene Roddenberry’s franchise is in development for a younger audience.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurtzman is in talks with Viacom-owned cable company Nickelodeon to produce a new Star Trek animated series geared towards younger viewers. An adult oriented animated series Lower Decks is already in development for CBS All-Access.

“There’s other animated things that we’re building that are an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone [from Lower Decks],” Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter in January.

Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins is said to be looking to the Star Trek animated series as a tentpole to revitalize the network’s lineup. In speaking about Star Trek appealing to younger audiences, Kurtzman said;  “Trek was always fully formed adults, already in Starfleet and people who have decided who they are. And it never was aspirational that way. It’s important to me to find a way to go back and reach younger kids in a way that Trek should and never really has.”

There are currently no details on what the animated Trek series will be about, but we will definitely be covering this story and the series as it develops.
