In October, it was reported that 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford had been cast in Avengers Endgame in a mysterious role. Now we know who she was cast as and why her role was cut from the final film.
When Langford was cast, speculation grew from the trailers that she would be playing Kate Bishop and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton would be handing over the mantle of Hawkeye to her. It turns out that her role was directly linked to Tony Stark’s journey.
It turns out that Langford was cast as the adult version of Tony Stark’s daughter Morgan in the film. Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed the news on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Langford’s scene was meant to mirror the father/daughter scene in Infinity War between Thanos and young Gamora.
“There was an idea that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers, and there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station,” Joe Russo said. “We showed it to a test audience and it was really confusing for them.” according to Joe Russo.
In the wake of Tony’s sacrifice, Joe Russo said; “His future daughter forgave him and gave him peace to go. The idea felt resonate, but it just was too many ideas in an overcomplicated movie.
Admittedly, the scene would have added some symmetry to the two films, but in the aftermath of what was put on-screen, I agree with the Russo brothers decision.
