The Rundown: After suffering devastating personal losses, Jessica Cruz employs one last gambit to both stop Darkseid and save her friends.
After the tragic loss of one of her teammates, Jessica finds herself going toe to toe with Azrael to stop him from killing Epoch. As the former teammates fight, Jessica continues to hold back as Darkseid’s newest New God fights to both destroy her and take the Revision Mechanism. Holding back her power to save Jean Paul could cost her dearly, but Blackfire makes the decision to finish the fight permanently.
With more of her friends gone and her promise to save them broken, Cruz must deal with the reality of Darkseid’s pending attack on the facility. With Epoch preparing to rewrite time itself, Jessica has one chance to change things and hopefully end this battle before it begins.
The Story: Abnett crafts a tough read in this issue. There is a lot going on and Abnett maintains an emotional through line focused on Jessica that makes the story work. Her journey in this series and this issue is one of the things that makes this storyline interesting and her conflict with her new team is giving her some harsh lessons in reality. There are some great surprises in this issue as well and the connection between Cruz and Victor is perfectly executed. This is a great issue that is filled with interesting, surprising and unexpected moments that make me want to read on and see what happens next.
The Art: Cliff Richards some a visual punch with the art in this issue. From the battles to the beautifully detailed exteriors, the art is the perfect complement to the tone of the story.
