The Rundown: A past pain is revealed and the League prepares for war.
As the forces dedicated to killing Lobo move in on the ruins of Apokolips, the League prepares for battle. Unfortunately, the specter of what happened the last time they were on the planet hangs over them and Batman recalls the mission that cost them the life of the Martian Manhunter. With the forces of Darkseid poised to destroy multiple worlds at once, Batman and J’onn are the only ones that can find a solution. A solution that will cost J’onn his life and cause a rift in the team.
As Superman watches over Lobo and Flash patrols the area, the bounty hunter reveals that he was hired to do the job that put him in the crosshairs of the United Planets. As both Superman and Flash wonder who might have hired Lobo, Superman discovers that there are forces headed their way with a familiar face in the lead.
The Story: Chip Zdarsky crafts a tense, emotional ride in this issue. Even with the present action being teased, the past story provides plenty of action, adventure and emotional stakes. The reader gets the full story of what split the League and the events are laid out perfectly to showcase these characters, their strengths and their flaws. An enjoyable adventure bolstered by great writing and plot.
The Art: Mendonca delivers some impressive imagery throughout the issue. There are some great action beats throughout and the drama of the visuals are engaging.
