Regret, sacrifice and guilt are the themes of this issue and those thoughts are going to lead to same dangerous choices for the team.
After the events of Metal, Nightmaster was killed. At his funeral in the Oblivion Bar, Detective Chimp is presented with the hero’s sword and proclaimed not only as the new owner of the establishment, but also as the protector of Nightmaster’s world Myrra. Not exactly thrilled with either prospect, Bobo does what he does best; he drinks.
When Zatanna, Diana and Kirk go the bar seeking a potential weapon to stop the Otherkind, they know the only place this weapon might be is in the mystical land of Myrra. Unfortunately, Detective Chimp is in no mood to help them and refuses to take them. When Zatanna cracks the enchantment that binds the sword to him, Bobo tries to warn them about going to the mystic world, but they ignore him.
Their intrusion brings forth an army of the dead that they must fight their way through and the return of a familiar face who is not happy that Detective Chimp has returned.
Back on Earth, Constantine and Swamp Thing have a death wish and they decide that they are going to summon Dr. Fate back to Earth and take him on. The battle goes about as well as they would suspect, but Nabu’s overconfidence blinds him to the intervention from one of the Higher Powers of magic.
This issue is both fun and tragic in equal measure with Bobo desperately trying to come to grips with power and responsibilities that he didn’t want and doesn’t believe he can handle. The secrets he is keeping from the rest of the team are going to have some dire consequences and I enjoy how James Tynion IV is laying this story out with the connection to Metal as well as the return of characters that haven’t been seen in a while. I continue to be interested in where this story goes with this eclectic group of characters.
The art is amazing. Some of the best scenes in the issue are the fight scenes between Diana and a fire-breathing dragon as well as Constantine and Swamp Thing taking on Dr. Fate. Great composition with some dynamic character designs.
