Zatarra wakes his young daughter up every morning in a routine designed to teach her about magic and how to wield it. When young Zatanna asks her father about her training, he explains to her about the laws of nature and the energy of magic. All lessons that Zatanna must try to remember as she is confronted by the creature calling itself the Upside-Down Man.
Zatanna and Wonder Woman are on the defensive against the creature as Doctor Fate has betrayed them and released the creature. Detective Chimp tries to stop the monster with Man-Bat, but they are not successful. John Constantine and Swamp Thing attempt to fight and find that they are outmatched by the creature as well. It’s up to Zatanna’s focus and a power within Diana that she didn’t know was there to stop the creature from destroying all magic and everyone who uses it.
Tynion does a great job of tying up this particular storyline. It was a well done conclusion that leaves the door open for some even better stories to be told in the future. It also opens new mysteries for the team to uncover as well as a new and formidable threat to them all. I like how the characters are used in this issue and the evolution of this particular team is going to be something worth reading.
Martinez Bueno has some beautiful art in this issue. I really like how the characters are rendered and there is some visceral menace to the way Upside-Down Man is drawn. The contrast is shadows and perspective give the art some additional elements that enhance the story in a positive way.
