The Rundown: In a last attempt to bring the world back into some sense of order, Doctor Fate will seek the help of powerful beings.
Doctor Fate in the form of Khalid Nassour has traveled to Tanzania to make a final appeal to the only entities that can stop the war of the Parliaments. He seeks an audience with the avatars of stone, flame, waves and vapor to appeal to them to end the destruction being caused by the war devastating areas of the country. As he makes his appeal, the avatars argue that humanity does not deserve to be saved.
At the same time, Animal Man turns inward to speak to the microscopic animals within us all and ask them to help fight off the infection plaguing the people around him, himself included. As both heroes make their pleas and wait for the outcomes, Zatanna fights Anton Arcane as Constantine fights to get Abby to remember the truth and fight back the power of the rot.
The Story: Ram V and James Tynion IV craft a story that is layered and works on each layer. While I would have liked to see more of Abby’s struggle and realization, the plot had a good balance between the different battles. There wasn’t a lot of dialogue between the heroes, but the philosophical arguments made throughout the story made up for it with great dialogue and intense subject matter.
The Art: Alvaro Martinez Bueno and Amancay Nahuelpan deliver some intense and dark atmosphere in the visuals. There is a creepy, muted quality to the art that works in a story that is both intense and serious.
