The Rundown: The team splits up as some are fighting the infection taking over Los Angeles as the rest continue their hunt for Swamp Thing.
Zatanna and Constantine believe that the only person that can help them rescue Swamp Thing is the love of his life Abby Arcane. Unfortunately, they cannot find the woman and are on their way to an abandoned sanitarium that might hold the answers they seek. When they enter the Heart of the Rot, John discovers something unusual growing into it and follows it, leaving Zatanna to fight the creatures emerging from the rot and their leader with a familiar face.
At the same time, the rest of the team is fighting the infection taking over Los Angeles and a desperate Animal Man tries to find a solution using the smallest animal he can find to control.
The Story: Tense and full of atmosphere, James Tynion IV and Ram V does a great job of splitting the team into two separate stories that are both compelling and interesting in their connections. Using Abby Arcane’s storyline throughout the issue was a great touch, especially when the surprise villain is revealed. There are some great moments throughout and I continue to enjoy the dynamic between Zatanna and John Constantine. There is drama there that continues to be entertaining and I am interested in seeing where it goes and how it evolves.
The Art: Alvaro Martinez Bueno delivers some excellent art in this issue. I really enjoyed the tonal contrasts between the Abby Arcane story parts and the rest of the story. There is also a Bohemian Rhapsody homage in the issue that looks fantastic and made me smile.
