Iron Man, Jungle Book and live action The Lion King director Jon Favreau is being brought in to oversee a new live action Star Wars series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service and while details on the series are light, the budget is expected to be huge.
Favreau will executive produce and write the new series for Lucasfilm and Disney. The New York Times has revealed that Favreau’s vision of the Star Wars universe on the small screen will cost $100 million dollars for the first season. The series is slated for ten episodes so that is $10 million dollars per episode. Star Trek Discovery held the previous record for most expensive series per episode with $8-$8.5 million per episode.
“Star Wars is a big world, and Disney’s new streaming service affords a wonderful opportunity to tell stories that stretch out over multiple chapters.” Favreau said. According to Favreau, the series will take place seven years after the battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi and will feature all new characters and cutting edge technology including GCI and motion capture.
Lucasfilm has another Star Wars property slated to premiere this fall. Star Wars Resistance is an anime inspired animated series that takes place prior to Star Wars The Force Awakens. Could live action versions of characters from Resistance or the highly popular Star Wars Rebels series make their way to Favreau’s series? We’ll have to wait and see.
