When Batman v Superman and Justice League star Jeremy Irons was announced as a member of the cast of Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series, many speculated on who the star would be playing.
/Film and Collider are both reporting that Irons will be taking on a familiar role in the new series. According to both sources, Jeremy Irons will be playing the older version of Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias in the upcoming HBO series. For those unfamiliar with Watchmen, Ozymandias is the former superhero and industrialist who orchestrates a fake alien invasion that murders millions of people in order to force the world back from the brink of nuclear war.
According to /Film, Irons’ character will be an “aging and imperious lord of a British manor.” It has also been noted that newspaper headlines leaked from set photos reveal that Veidt is dead. So will Irons’ Adrian Veidt be seen in flashbacks in the new series or will he have faked his own death to retire from public scrutiny?
Emmy winner Jean Smart has also joined the cast as Agent Blake, an FBI agent tasked with tracking down vigilantes in a world where they are still outlawed. The announcement of her character also has fan speculating about a possible connection to the original Watchmen series. Edward Blake aka The Comedian was a vigilante in the original series and the father of Laurie Jupiter. Before he was murdered by being thrown out of a window by Oxymandias, Blake was investigating Veidt. Could Blake have fathered another illegitimate child and this child became an FBI agent?
We’ll have to wait for the series to premiere to find out?
