According to an exclusive in  Entertainment Weekly, Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman will co-write and direct an original Ghostbusters film set in the world of the first film. Reitman has been nominated four times for Academy Awards for co-writing and directing the films Juno and Up In The Air. His most recent films include the Charlize Theron drama Tully as well as the Hugh Jackman historical drama The Front Runner.

I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

The film is slated to begin production in a few months from Sony and is scheduled to be released the summer of 2020. With the death of original Ghostbuster writer and star Harold Ramis along with Bill Murray’s apprehensions about returning to the franchise, cameos from the previous cast are unknown along with the plot of the new film.

“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet,” says Reitman.

According to the EW article, an animated Ghostbusters film is also being developed with a different team.
