Sony continues to move ahead with its plans to expand the world of Spider-Man without actually featuring the wall crawler with the announcement of another Marvel Comics film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Jared Leto has signed on to play the role of sometime villain and anti-hero Morbius the Living Vampire in a spin-off film for Sony.
Morbius will be produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tomlach and Lucas Foster and will be directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the duo who created Netflix’s Lost in Space remake. Espinosa is the director of the sci-fi thriller Life.
Morbius is the story of Michael Morbius. Born with a rare blood disease, Michael uses his scientific genius to work on a cure for himself. When it goes wrong, he is endowed with the powers of a vampire including super strength, flight and a thirst for blood. In the comics Morbius fought Spider-Man on several occasions but his story evolved to him becoming a tragic hero teaming up with other supernatural Marvel heroes like Blade and Ghost Rider.
Jared Leto is an Oscar winning actor for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club and recently played Batman villain Joker in Suicide Squad. He is rumored to be returning to the role in both the Suicide Squad sequel as well as a Joker standalone film.
