The Rundown: Jane Foster’s return to the world of superheroes will change not only her personal life, but her professional one as well, if she survives her first mission.
Jane Foster is the last Valkyrie and she is determined to be the best hero that she can be. The first order of business is stopping a group of wannabe super thieves from stealing a shipment of weapons left over from the War of the Realms including Brunnhilde’s sword Dragonfang. Jane is mostly successful, but the demands of her professional life as a Doctor come calling and her constant absences force her boss to send her to the morgue.
When the mystery of the missing sword deepens, Jane must become Valkyrie to enter Valhalla and ask her dead friend for help in finding it. When she emerges with some Asgardian help, her new powers are too late to stop the man wielding the weapon from violently revealing himself.
The Story: Jason Aaron and Al Ewing begin an interesting and fun new story for Jane Foster. There are some great moments throughout and Jane’s journey as the new Valkyrie looks like it si going to be interesting to follow. There is a good mixture of superhero origin tropes mixed in to be interesting as Jane navigates a new persona and new powers while also learning about the responsibility of being the last Valkyrie. It will be interesting to see where this story goes next, but this is a solid debut for both the series and the character.
The Art: Cafu does some impressive and beautiful art in this issue. The character looks amazing and all of the action and spectacle the story requires is rendered beautifully.
