Marvel Studios WandaVision is getting another spin-off series and the return of another Marvel villain to the MCU.
According to The Hollywood Reporter and other sources, James Spader is set to return as the villainous AI Ultron in the upcoming Vision series coming to Disney Plus. Paul Bettany is set to return as Vision in the upcoming series to be run by Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas. There is currently no title for the upcoming series.
Spader is known for films like Less Than Zero and Stargate as well as series like Boston Legal and The Black List. He gave voice to the villain in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the film, Ultron was an Artificial Intelligence housed in the scepter Loki used in the first Avengers film. After being discovered by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, Ultron decides to destroy humanity for his own twisted vision of world peace.
As part of his plan, he created an artificial body that he would transfer his consciousness into. This body became Vision after Stark’s previous artificial intelligence JARVIS became integrated into it with the help of Thor. Vision’s original body was destroyed in Avengers Infinity War and physically recreated into a new White Vision form in WandaVision. A form that was given Vision’s retrieved memories and disappeared.
It will be interesting to see how Ultron returns in this series, but its direct connection to Vision should make for an interesting dynamic.
