The Rundown: Korvac’s tragic past is revealed as he prepares for his inevitable victory.
Korvac’s tragic existence in the future is revealed as he betrays his fellow humans for a position within the Badoon empire. In the present, he finally makes his way to the location he seeks and finds what he was looking for, the original Human Torch. After revealing that he was modeled after Hammond, he makes him an offer. One that will restore to him what he once was. Jim agrees and is taken to Korvac’s lab to begin the process.
While Korvac’s plan is imprinted in Jim’s body, he is shown the events that led to Korvac’s death. Events that a hero would never let happen. Unfortunately, his trust of Korvac proves to be a one way street and the Torch becomes another soldier in Korvac’s army.
The Story: Cantwell crafts a great trip through the history of Korvac and reveals the flawed man beneath the wannabe god. It’s a great story that has some amazing dialogue and character interactions. The plot has some interesting surprises throughout as well and I love the mystery and discovery throughout. Korvac’s backstory is engaging and I am interested in seeing where this story goes next.
The Art: Cafu delivers some stellar art throughout this issue. There are so many great visual moments and every panel engaged me with detail and tone.
