The Rundown: Tony’s quest to rediscover who he really is will bring him closer and closer to the death he seems to seek.
A year ago, a familiar threat is reborn. A threat that has Tony Stark in his sights. A year later, Stark finds himself battling Absorbing Man in the ring while bets are made for the amusement of Arcade. In the aftermath, an injured Tony seeks a measure of inner peace with Hellcat, but his racing thoughts keep him from finding it. When a group of Stark Enterprises scientists are kidnapped by Cardiac, Iron Man leaps into action.
During the battle, Tony finds the scientists are trapped in something that is killing them slowly and when he can’t think of another way to free them, he sacrifices himself to do so. A move that lands him in the hospital where Patsy tries to force him to confront his recent actions and what they mean.
The Story: Cantwell writes an interesting and, at times, melancholy story for Tony Stark in this issue. There is a shadow hanging over Stark’s motivations and having Walker confront him about them is a good use of the character as well as a great way of showcasing the positive and negative aspects of who Tony is as a person and a hero. The story can get a little maudlin at times, but it continues to be interesting enough in the questions it asks of the character.
The Art: Cafu’s art is amazing. From the action to the character moments, the art is beautifully detailed and matches the tone of the story perfectly.
