Sony proved that they could produce a successful Spider-Man film and take on the Disney juggernaut in their own backyard, animation.
Last night Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature at the 2018 Golden Globes. Beating out Disney powerhouse films like The Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2, Spider-Verse pulled off an upset win that has been heralded across social media.
With its endearing story and unique visual style, Into the Spider-Verse gave the animated world a jolt by showcasing an original story and pushing the boundaries of animation by seamlessly mixing in comic book style and elements. The film is a huge success for Sony Animation as it gets closer to $300 million dollars worldwide on a $90 million dollar budget.
Hopefully, the film’s success will inspire other animators and future features to embrace new and vibrant ideas.
