Disney’s Incredibles 2 opened this weekend and the sequel 14 years in the making made a huge splash on the weekend box office.
According to multiple reports in The New York Times, CNN Money and more, the sequel brought in over $180 million dollars at the domestic box office. This is up 30 percent from what predictions were for the film’s take. Incredibles 2 now holds the box office record for an animated release in opening total sales. The previous holder was Shrek the Third at $151 million adjusted.
The Walt Disney Company spent about $300 million both making and marketing the sequel directed by Brad Bird and with the international box office, it looks like the sequel has a total box office of $231.5 million dollars worldwide. Incredibles 2 is also the third largest opening of the year behind other Disney properties Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.
The box office take of Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and The Wasp and the upcoming Christopher Robin is expected to cover the predicted $50 million dollar loss from the low box office of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Incredibles 2 is written and directed by Brad Bird and stars Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L Jackson, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Vowell, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush and Isabella Rossellini.
