The Rundown: A detective investigates a series of murders that could be connected with the new status quo throughout the world.
In a world where the population has embraced a recent phenomenon called the Bloom that transforms people into hybrid human/plants, a series of murders have rocked the city. Agent Spears and his partner have been assigned to the case when another Bloom recipient is found murdered in an alley and Spears begins his investigation in the midst of social turmoil between those that have bloomed and those that refuse to.
At the same time, an older woman finds herself being brought to a facility by her family in order to give herself over to something called the Upcycler. As Spears continues his investigation and another victim makes her way to the same location, the woman discovers too late that there is something dark at the center of the Upclycler. Something that could have repercussions throughout society.
The Story: Conrad creates an interesting and evocative world in this first issue. I found the story really engaging and filled with interesting characters and a premise that is compelling on different levels. There are so many layers to this plot and all of them made me excited to see what comes next and how they are connected. An intriguing and compelling first issue.
The Art: Pearson and Bonato create some beautiful imagery throughout the issue. I really like the visual style of the issue and the unique imagery throughout it.
