The Rundown: A land favored by missing gods finds itself preparing for war against a dangerous enemy.
The land of Ndawo, human lives are protected by the gods that favor them. When those gods left the land to go to war, many of those people suffered. When they returned, the gods find their people shattered into different empires as a new darkness grows across the land and decide to leave those empires to their own devices.
A thousand years later, a series of attacks on local villages have become a concern for the remaining empires as the men and boys are slaughtered and the women taken. With their forces stretched thin, the queen decides to send a group of warriors, the Imbokodo, to discover the source of these attacks as the rest of the empires prepare for war.
The Story: Rametsi and Mabanna craft an engaging, complex and thoroughly entertaining story in this first issue while also creating far reaching and compelling lore. That lore can be a little dense in the first half of the story because there is a lot there which takes away from learning more about the characters, but all of it serves an interesting story that captured my attention with its world building and character stakes. I am invested in seeing how this story grows and evolves.
The Art: Motaung’s art is visually stunning. There are some breathtaking angles and character designs throughout this issue and I love the visual style of this issue so much I want it to continue throughout the series.
