When it was announced that Amazon would be bringing to life a new series set in the world of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, fans began to speculate on which characters would be featured and who might be cast. Well there is one role that could be the easiest to fill.
Sir Ian McKellen has expressed his interest to return to the world of Middle Earth and reprise his role of Gandalf for the multi-season Amazon Prime series currently in development. While talking to Graham Norton, McKellen, who starred as Gandalf in the both the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as the three Hobbit films from Peter Jackson, was asked if he had been contacted about returning to the role. Although he has not been asked to return, McKellen seemed surprised that anyone else would be considered for the role. A sentiment that many fans and insiders share considering Gandalf is 7,000 years old and McKellen has had no problem returning to the role when called upon.
The series, which will span the time between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring has garnered a five season commitment from Amazon with the potential of a spin-off series being added in the future. With the possibility of McKellen returning to the role, could more actors look to reprise their roles for either cameos or story arcs on the new series? We’ll just have to wait and see.
