The Rundown: Hellboy and the Professor discover the secrets of a famous paranormal society.
Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm find themselves in London in the early 1950’s on their way to a meeting. A meeting that the professor has been putting off and recent events have kept them from attending. After meeting with the professor’s uncle, a round of drinks loosens the older man’s tongue and he begins to tell them about the Silver Lantern Club. He also begins to tell them of one of his own supernatural adventures.
Simon tells them of a technological discovery he was witness to in his youth. An early form of telegraph that unfortunately produced some sounds no one was familiar with at the time. After returning to the Club, he tells the group about the discovery and his account worries them enough that they decide to investigate. Their investigation leads them to a possessed machine and an unorthodox way of stopping it.
The Story: Mignola and Roberson craft a different type of Hellboy story in this issue and it works as a great way of expanding the world of the character. The story is rich, interesting and entertaining with great dialogue. You get a real sense of Simon’s personality throughout and the story is engaging enough to make me want to read more.
The Art: Stenbeck and Mitten do great work with the art in the issue. There is great atmosphere in every panel and the details are brilliantly done.
