The Rundown: Hellboy and his partner track down a local legend in order to save a young woman accused of murder.
A young woman has been arrested for the murder of her boyfriend. Hellboy and Pauline Raskin are called in when the girl tells her story. Apparently, she and her boyfriend decided to spend the night in a haunted house and she shot and killed what she thought was the ghost of a man named Wakeman who murdered seven women before hanging himself. Hellboy believes the girl’s story and he and Pauline go to investigate.
After finding an old man with a connection to the story, they discover that the body of Wakeman was taken to a women’s medical school where its presence preceded a series of accidents that befell the women there. After learning where the women would go to meet after taking the dead man’s corpse, Hellboy will discover Wakeman isn’t finished bringing death into the world.
The Story: A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining story from Mike Mignola. The characters, the dialogue and every twist and turn in the plot is a reminder of how endearing and interesting the character of Hellboy is and how dense and engaging his world is as well. I enjoyed the pace of the story immensely and all of the details were engaging.
The Art: Adam Hughes delivers some beautifully stylish art to this issue. There are some great character shots as well as action. A great looking issue and the art perfectly matches the tone and style of the story.
