The Rundown: Hellboy finds himself in Romania circa 1962 on the hunt for a monster that’s been plaguing the locals.
Deep in the Carpathian Mountains, a beast has been wreaking havoc. After getting the rundown from the Professor, Hellboy speaks to the locals about the threat and is given directions to where the creature has been sighted. He finds it and the two have a pitched battle that leaves Hellboy battered and injured at the bottom of the mountain.
Rescued and treated by a Romani woman and her daughter, Hellboy awakens to an unbelievable story of the creation of the Beast of Vargu and how a supernatural intervention might have just saved his life.
The Story: Mike Mignola tells a beautifully paced, action filled story with a great emotional core. As great as the action is, the tale that’s told in the quieter moments is compelling and interesting. There is a great twist that Mignola adds to this story with Hellboy and the Romani. One that I can’t spoil because it is definitely worth reading for yourself. This is a great standalone story that reminds readers what is so great about the character of Hellboy.
The Art: Duncan Fegredo delivers some great art in this issue. Everything from the characters to the backgrounds are filled with rich details that draw the eye.
