The Rundown: Jonathan Crane enlists Harley Quinn to help take down Black Mask for the Magistrate.
Black Mask takes revenge on an associate. In order to catch him, Jonathan Crane forces Harley Quinn to act as an advisor to the Magistrate’s Peacekeepers. She gives Crane the requested information. But, in typical Harley fashion, she diverts and behaves unexpectedly. In the midst of their search, Crane battles with old demons. Meanwhile, Harley plots her escape.
The Story: I’m fascinated with how Harley Quinn becomes another pawn in the Magistrate’s game. And the role she plays is brilliant. There’s something about a criminally insane psychiatrist helping solve crimes that appeals to me. It’s very Silence of the Lambs. Her interactions with a reformed Jonathan Crane and Black Mask are masterful. Stephanie Phillips does a great job in reminding the reader that Harley, no matter her circumstances, is a force to be reckoned with.
The Art: Tamra Bonvillain delivers with her color panels. A dizzying array of colors set against a darkened palate perfectly encompasses the passion and depth of Harley Quinn’s world. While more muted colors are perfect for the mind of Jonathan Crane.
