The Rundown: In a fairytale world, a young boy chooses a dangerous quest that will put him at odds with everyone.
Ansel is a different kid. He invents strange devices and dresses differently than everyone in his fairytale village. When the time comes for him to choose a quest to go on before taking his place in the village, he tells his friends that he is going to look for the mythical beings known as the Folklords.
The next day, when he goes to the ceremony to announce his quest, a friend of his steals the idea and everyone sees what happens when even mention of the Folklords is made publicly. In the aftermath, Ansel and his friend decide to go on the quest anyway.
The Story: Folklords tells an interesting and fun story with this first issue. Matt Kindt does an excellent job of mixing in different themes and tones and having all of them work. Ansel’s journey is interesting and everything in his world from the forces trying to suppress him to the dreams inspired by another world are engaging and compelling. I was locked into this story from the first issue and really want to see what happens next.
The Art: Matt Smith’s art is beautiful. All of the characters and backgrounds are fantastic to look at and Smith creates a captivating world in this first issue.
