The Serenity once again finds itself in trouble in more ways than one as this new issue begins. One of the engines is one fire and Kaylee has to find some way to keep them all alive as Wash tries to keep the ship in the sky.

Just as the crew finds themselves barely out of one grave situation, a hail of missile fire shoves them back into another. Forced to land on a remote moon, Mal and crew proceed to find some work to afford fuel as they hide from the mystery ship that was firing on them. After goading Jayne into a fight, the crew find themselves hired by a group of mysterious missionaries who are looking to avoid being set on by bandits. As they travel with this group, the ship returns and conveys information about Mal and Zoe that reveals a dark part of their past.

The biggest advantage that this issue has is that it can start anywhere at any time. Pak does a great job of starting a story that could be at any point in the journey of these characters between the original series and the feature film. This allows for a more interesting and expansive story to be told. Pak plants the seeds for a story that is both personal and more broadly dangerous for everyone following Mal.

Dan McDaid has some amazing art in this issue and everything from the details on the ship to the backgrounds are great to look at. The story moves really well with the art and there are panels that feature flashbacks in real time that I enjoyed. Rather than focusing on those moments as individual panels or pages, he integrates them into the reality of Mal dealing with this current situation. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
