Sony Pictures TV’s Gemstone Studios got it first greenlight for a reboot of the classic series Fantasy Island for Fox.
According to Deadline, the series will be written and produced by Liz Craft and Sarah Fain of the series The 100, Angel, Dollhouse and others. The series is described as keeping the semi-anthological format of the original series with a small group of main characters living on the island and new guests arriving with every episode.
There’s no information on whether the new series will follow the original in style and tone or will it take after more recent reboot attempts and make the series darker and more horror based. According to the Deadline article, “Each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who walk in with a desire, but end up reborn to themselves through the magical realism of Fantasy Island.”
There was an attempted reboot of the series in 1998 starring Malcolm McDowell and Madchen Amick which ran on ABC for one season and earlier this year Blumhouse released a horror version of Fantasy Island on the big screen.
