Ahab and his hounds are on their way to Atlantis to make sure that Cyclops is dead. As he prepares to make his way to the Searebro, Kitty calls to warn Jean of what’s coming. When Cannonball returns to the mansion with an unconscious Shatterstar, the rest of the team wants to know where X-Force and, more importantly, young Jean are.
Jean’s revenge mission with the rest of X-Force takes an unexpected turn when they track down and attack young Cable at his base of operations. After Jean finally ends the fight and agrees to talk to Cable, he shows her exactly what he is doing and why. The revelation spurs her into action and they race to find Scott. As the hounds attack, the team falls back to the medical bay to protect Cyclops. When Ahab moves in for the kill, the X-Men are left reeling from a devastating loss.
Brisson does a great job of ramping up the tension and stakes in this story. The writing is well done and all of the character moments work, especially with Cable. There is a matter of fact style of interaction Cable is having with his fellow mutants and his non-nonsense style makes him more interesting. It’s going to be interesting to see how this character is incorporated into the rest of the X-Men books if he survives. Brisson writes some great moments for Scott and Jean as well and the end of this issue is an emotional gut punch when one thinks of the implications for the characters.
The art in this issue is sublime. There are great panels that mix light and dark, detail and shadow. I really loved the art style in this issue as well as the composition of the panels, especially the final one.
