The Rundown: Spencer will be tested on his resolve as the true power behind the Aegis is revealed.
Spencer has been called in to be investigated in his use of magic. With some idea what’s waiting for him, he prepares to face the investigator DeQuan Hill. When Hill takes Spencer’s wand to investigate the spells he’s been using, he asks him about the incident that brought them together not knowing this is exactly what Spencer had been planning. What Spencer doesn’t know is the length and breath of Aegis opposition that has been building for years and what that will mean for the future.
At the same time, the power behind the Aegis is revealed and it is shocking. The powers that control magic are worse than one could suspect and they have targeted Spencer for retribution.
The Story: Taut, tense and full of surprising revelations, Brandon Thomas lays some serious cards on the table for both the reader and Spencer. I was not expecting the reveals in this issue and those reveals add more drama to Spencer’s story and his mission. It’s going to be interesting to see how he navigates this new paradigm and equally interesting to see where Thomas takes the story now that the audience knows who is pulling the strings of the Aegis.
The Art: Khary Randolph brings style and finesse to the art in this issue. Everything from the characters to the brilliant use of shadow and composition give this issue a dark, gritty feel that pulls the audience in visually.
