The Rundown: The Eternals take on Thanos and fight to restore the machine that resurrects them, but at a terrible cost.
The circumstances behind Thanos’ return are revealed as well as the fact that one of the Eternals is directly responsible and keeping the Titan on a short and dangerous leash. A leash Thanos breaks when he goes after the Eternals in a deadly confrontation. As the Eternals start to get the upper hand, Phastos calls them in to help repair the machine. Unfortunately, his call sends them to the far corners of the Earth as the effects of the machine’s failure begin to rain destruction down on the planet.
Ikaris races back to stop the destruction and must make the ultimate sacrifice to save the machine. In the aftermath, Druig discovers the secret behind Thanos’ return and takes steps to make it permanent. When the Eternals finally return, they discover the horrifying truth about the machine, its purpose and the cost of their immortality.
The Story: Gillen brings this arc to a brilliant and surprising conclusion. All of the twists and turns throughout the story did not prepare me for the devastating reveal that changes everything about the characters, their purpose and their connection to humanity. I love the way this story unfolds and how it moves to a surprising and intriguing conclusion.
The Art: Ribic delivers some fantastic visuals throughout this issue. The art captures the emotions of the moment perfectly and the action is breathtaking.
