Netflix has found a writer for its live action adaptation of a video game hit.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has signed writer Jon Spaihts to take on the live action adaptation of the hit XBOX game Gears of War.
Spaihts is the co-writer of Denis Villenueve’s DUNE adaptation for Warner Brothers as well as co-writing the first Doctor Strange film. His credits also include the upcoming second part of the Dune series as well as Prometheus and Passengers. Spaihts released a statement saying;
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen,” he said.
The Coalition, the game designers behind the franchise released a statement as well with Netflix saying; “We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life. Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic science fiction universes and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans,”
With the film in the writing stages, there have been no casting announcements, but as a Fancaster, my money and hopes are on Dave Bautista taking on the role of Marcus Fenix in the franchise. Let me know what you think in the comments.
