The Rundown: The team picks up an old friend as they try stop another one from devouring the universe.
The remaining members of Doom Patrol are rocketing towards the planet sized head of Cliff Steele as it devours everything in its path. On their way the literally run into Flex who recently escaped the Secret Spandex. After landing on Planet Cliff they discover that there are other people there and a growing threat to both themselves and the rest of the universe.
At the same time, Casey Brinke has made it to the past in Jane’s Underground and needs to see Jane’s main personality about Mento’s plan to stop Cliff. As the team fights Cliff’s guards protecting the planet, Casey must appeal to Jane to send a message to her present self to stop Mento’s plan before he dooms the entire universe.
The Story: Gerard Way and Jeremy Lambert bring this story to a close with humor, style and fun as the team gathers to take on one of their own. While the ending did feel abrupt at places, it did end with a flair that opens up new and interesting stories to tell in the future. The dialogue and plot had all the strangeness that makes the series so entertaining and doesn’t miss a beat while it sticks the landing. A fun story that actually finds room to have heart as well.
The Art: Nick Derington’s style is perfect for this type of story. It fits the wacky, colorful aesthetic of this world and its characters. There were some visually entertaining moments throughout.
