After discovering what was being kept in the crate she was tasked to retrieve in the last issue, the only logical thing that Domino can do at this point….is to open it again.
With a vampire hunter hot on their trail, Neena and company decide that they are going to release Morbius the living Vampire from his prison because of Neena’s aversion to cages. An understandable sentiment, but completely misguided. Luckily, Rachel and Inez are ready when Morbius attacks and after a short discussion, we find out that Morbius is trying to be the hero in this story. A prospect that complicates matters when it’s time for him to feed.
After feeding on Domino, Morbius is feeling lucky and they might just need it when they find out that the next leg of their journey will take them to a nest of underwater vampires and their king who are preparing to release a vampire virus on the world using Morbius’ DNA.
This issue is pretty dark, but it retains the fun and action that makes this series enjoyable. Gail Simone continues to write great banter between Neena and her crew and I continue to enjoy how their relationships with each other grow and evolve. It’s fun to see how they react to situations and even in situations as scary as the one in this issue, they still come together and fight for each other. There are also some hilariously funny moments in the story as well from Outlaw at both the hotel and the beach.
I liked the depiction of Morbius in this issue a lot. His dubious motivations have always been interesting and this issue puts those motivations out in front. Putting the vampires underwater made the entire sequence scarier and added a palpable intensity to the story.
Baldeon is always impressive with the art in this series and this issue is no exception. The entire underwater fight was beautiful to see in both composition and detail. I would love to see him take on a Namor story to see his vision of Atlantis. The characters looks amazing and they are so expressive. A quality that adds to the fun of the story.
