Wong’s Msytical Special Forces, the Midnight Sons, met at the ruins of the Sanctum Sanctorum to discuss the strategy needed to take down Mephisto. Unbeknownst to the rest of the group, Wong has a special assignment in mind for former Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze.
Back in the present, the team is gathered around a fallen Blade, who is on the ground with Thor’s hammer sticking out of his chest. As Man-Thing and Brother Voodoo do what they can to minimize the Vampire Hunter’s pain, Wong is battling a possessed Strange, who sees his friends as enemies to destroy thanks to Mephisto. Wong knows he is no match for the Sorcerer Supreme, but a resourceful Bats decides to try something and possesses Stephen’s body.
As Thor decides to recover her hammer, Blade uses that moment to ride it back to its owner and strike. It’s a pretty bad ass move and really well done visually. As both teams battle in the streets of Las Vegas, someone is curiously absent; Johnny Blaze. The spirit of vengeance decides to confront Mephisto himself, giving the demon a chance to face him one on one. Unfortunately, no one was prepared for what would happen next.
The stakes get higher in this issue and it becomes more fun and interesting to read as this story continues. Wong’s team is written really well and there are so many different personalities and clashes to enjoy. Elsa’s insults at Scarlet Spider are hilarious and even the absurd moments with Moon Knight add to the overall story. The art is great as well with a center issue splash page that is gorgeous to look at. I really want to see what happens next.
