Stephen Strange should know by now to be careful what he wishes for. Especially when that wish is for something truly challenging.
That is the problem that the Sorcerer Supreme is lamenting after his defeat of Dormammu. As he goes through his life and the challenges he has faced, he can see the pattern of repetition and how he always seems to end up alone at the end of it all.
Wishing for a change in the status quo, Stephen is visited by Zoloz, an alien who possesses mystic powers and a bad attitude. His planet has been invaded by Galactus and after capturing Silver Surfer, they discover that Earth is immune to Galactus’ hunger. Wanting to know why, Zoloz confronts Strange and attacks. Using the combined power of a thousand sorcerers, he is able to trap Stephan and take the knowledge he needs.
Taking Stephen’s astral form with him, Zoloz makes Strange witness him banish Galactus from his planet to somewhere even more dangerous, the Mystic Realms. Strange will have to race against time to forge the weapons he needs to remove Galactus from the Mystic Realms before he undoes reality itself.
Barry Kitson and Mark Waid have raised the bar with this issue. This is a huge conflict for Strange to handle alone and I can’t wait to see what comes next. The dialogue was great and I enjoyed Stephen taking a moment for introspection before jumping back into the fray. So far the themes of Stephen not being as alone as he believes have worked out well in the story. It will be interesting to see how that holds true with Stephen seemingly going up against Galactus alone.
The art by Scott Koblish is amazing. There is so much visually going on in this issue and the dive into the Mystic Realms is beautiful.
