Disney has had continued success recently with their slate of live action adaptations of their classic animated films. The most recent adaptation of a classic Disney animated film is the upcoming live action adaptation of the Academy Award winning 1991 film Beauty and the Beast which comes out March 17th.
With that success in mind, Disney has announced that they have found a Director and Executive Producer for the live action adaptation of the 1998 animated feature film Mulan. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Disney has tapped Niki Caro to direct the film based on the Chinese folk tale of a young woman who impersonates a man in order to take her father’s place in the Emperor’s army.
Niki Caro has received critical acclaim for her previous film the Academy Award nominated film Whale Rider. She has also directed the films North Country, McFarland, USA and her most recent film The Zookeeper’s Wife is slated for release March 31, 2017. She was on the short list of directors for Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel film, but this effectively takes her out of the running.
The film will be Executive Produced by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Dragons EP Bill Kong. Kong was brought in after collaboration with Disney’s China-based team as well as Chinese cultural consultants.
No casting news has been released and I will continue to monitor this story in case there are new developments.
