The Rundown: Detective Tracy’s investigation into a massacre will bring him into the crosshairs of the underworld.
A local diner in the city becomes the scene of a violent massacre that kills the father of Tess Trueheart. Detective Dick Tracy is assigned to the case and he immediately goes looking for answers and his focus is on who would kill the newspaper man and the person he was meeting.
At the same time, Tess wants answers herself and will not stop until she gets them. After discovering some dangerous information, she goes looking for a lead. A lead that will bring her and Tracy together to protect a man being targeted by the mob for what he knows.
The Story: Segura and Moreci deliver a wonderful debut for the character that captures his world perfectly both from an action and intrigue perspective. I like that there is a mystery to Tracy and that people are still trying to determine who he is and what he stands for. I love the incorporation of classic villains in the issue as well and the agency given to characters like Tess. The story manages to capture a gritty noir style detective story without losing the heart of the character.
The Art: Borges does a fantastic job capturing the gritty style of the story visually. The imagery is beautifully detailed, brutal and engaging.
