The Rundown: The Defenders find themselves on a strange world at war.
The Defenders find themselves in the presence of a creature that looks like someone most of them know. Unfortunately, it cannot seem to communicate with them and Cloud attempts to on their behalf. Things do not go well and the creature goes on the attack. As the team tries to defend themselves, Strange attempts to use his chaotic magic to connect Cloud with the creature to stop its rampage. When a new being emerges to interrupt the conflict, the Defenders are unaware if it is friend or foe.
The entity takes them to the site of a raging battle that is connected to the being that they seek. After finding their quarry among the fighters, Masked Raider channels his powers to fight and Cloud discovers something about this world that is directly connected to their powers. As something new emerges, the Defenders will face more unknown beings and a loss of one of their own.
The Story: Ewing crafts an interesting story in this issue. The concepts are immediately engaging and the plot has some great nuanced moments for one of the characters. The dialogue and team dynamics continue to be impressive and I love the surreal nature of the story. I cannot wait to see what strange twists this story takes next.
The Art: Javier Rodriguez does an excellent job of capturing the surreal aspects of the story visually. The style is brilliant reminiscent, but original at the same time.
