The merc with a mouth is in the midst of a malaise. Wade has decided that he is not going into the office today and will instead stay at home and wallow in his depression. As he texts Negasonic about his decision, a bullet crashes through his window, shattering his phone. When the assassin on the other end of the gun that fired it decides to take aim at Deadpool for a kill shot, he is crushed under a giant monster being fought by the Fantastic Four.
Suffice it to say, the rest of Wade’s day and his consistent run ins with this mystery assassin tend to end the same way with interventions by Doctor Strange, alien abductions and other external situations that fail to bring a smile or a snide remark from Wade. As Deadpool deals with his existential angst, the reveal of who the mystery assassin is might be exactly the comedy gold needed to pull the merc out of his funk.
Skottie Young crafts a fun and funny slice of life issue for Wade Wilson to live through. Setting up the comedy beats for each scene and having them play out with Wade not engaging is a bold move for the character and the writer. What helps is the unintentional comedy of Deadpool’s would-be assassin running into the weird side of the Marvel universe as he stalks Wade through the city.
Hepburn’s art is really good in this issue. There is a the perfect mixture of whimsy and grit in the character designs as well as the action beats. This was a funny issue of Deadpool that worked because Wade was a spectator rather than an instigator. Well done.
