The Rundown: A skeptical coroner will discover her connection to the supernatural when she returns to her home town.
Sam Castillo has returned to her home town in order to move in with her mother and save her family home. Among the tension she is dealing with after uprooting her life, she also has to deal with her mother’s supernatural and spiritual life as the leader of a coven.
When she’s called in to perform an autopsy and discovers it’s someone from the same coven, Sam finds herself in the middle of a supernatural mystery involving a powerful killer and a power she never believed she had.
The Story: Mendez and Garcia create a near perfect first issue with an intriguing setup, world and characters. The story brilliantly sets up the stakes, the interpersonal conflicts and the potential threats. I really love the conflict between Sam and her mother. There is some great emotional drama brimming under the surface and I really love the cultural elements of the story as well as the supernatural story being revealed. I look forward to seeing where this story goes next.
The Art: Culberas delivers some beautiful art in the first issue. From that first beautifully detailed and lively image to the tension filled walk through the coroner’s office, I was immersed in the visual style of this story.
