The Rundown: Ben Reilly and Madelyne Pryor prepare to take their revenge with some unexpected help.
Ben Reilly wants the memories that have been lost to him and even his nightmares have convinced him that it is Peter Parker’s fault. Unfortunately, Limbo is feeding on his nightmares and Madelyne is using them to her advantage and their plan for revenge against both Spider-Man and the X-Men takes shape. Meanwhile, Peter and his friends meet to remember a lost friend and Peter has an intense conversation with Norman.
At the same time, Scott, Jean and the rest of the X-Men are enjoying Christmas in New York when Magick begins to feel something wrong happening. Something Madelyne sets in motion to cause a massive supernatural attack on the city causing Peter and the mutants to leap into action. What none of them know is that Ben is out for revenge against Peter’s new ally and Madelyne is unleashing a dangerous enemy bent on destroying Spider-Man.
The Story: Wells creates an entertaining and tension filled story in this first issue. Both Ben and Madelyne have some interesting and compelling personal grievances and I like seeing how they plan to address them in this series and with the people involved within it. I like seeing Spider-Man teaming up with the X-Men and the surprises in this issue have me excited to see what happens next.
The Art: Kubert delivers some beautifully detailed and exciting art throughout the issue. The visuals are fun and entertaining and deliver on the tone of the story brilliantly.
